OFFLINE TREE PLANTING
In parallel to the online “tree planting” game, 51Tree will invest the money spent by players in the online game in Plan Vivo Certified Trees in order to help regenerate tree-coverage in countries such as Uganda, Mexico or Mozambique.
What are Plan Vivo Certified Trees
- Through the Plan Vivo System, the purchase of carbon credits not only helps to mitigate climate change but can help communities in developing countries invest in their own future therefore contributing to poverty reduction. In Uganda, Plan Vivo has been engaged since 2003 in involving small scale land holders in Plan Vivo’s program Trees for Global Benefit Systems implemented are designed to provide opportunities for farmers to use their land in a profitable manner (woodlots), or to place it under less intensive management (reforestation) Conserve biodiversity by promoting indigenous tree species
How does it work?
- Companies, individuals or institutions wishing to offset greenhouse gas emissions can purchase voluntary emission reductions (VERs) via the project trust fund, of the offset project. These VERs are in the form of Plan Vivo Certificates.
The project uses the Plan Vivo management system to register and monitor carbon sequestration activities implemented by farmers. Local promoters help farmers to draw up their own work plans, These are assessed for technical feasibility, social and environmental impact and carbon sequestration potential. Viable plans are registered with the Trust Fund and an agreement for the supply of carbon services via the Fund is signed. The Trust Fund then provides farmers with financial and technical assistance to implement farm or community-scale forestry and agroforestry developments, on the basis of the carbon that will be sequestered.
51Tree Certificates
A 51Tree Certificate represents
- the long-term sequestration or reduction of one tonne of carbon dioxide (CO2), plus additional environmental and social benefits:
- Increased resilience and ability to adapt to climate change
- Conservation of threatened ecosystems and native species
- Strengthening of protected areas
- Biodiversity maintenance and improvement
- Watershed protection
- Soil stabilization
- Regulation of regional micro-climates
- Poverty reduction and sustainable livelihoods through e.g. improved agricultural productivity, income from timber, fruits, nuts and non-timber forest products, PES
- Improved social capital through participatory planning, capacity-building, transfer of knowledge and skills.
